about

Hi, I'm Steve.

I budgeted my way out of debt, paid off our mortgage, and left a job I didn't need anymore. northcell is how I help other families do the same, with a lot less stress.

For years, money was the quiet weight in our house. I earned a good income, but the paycheck would land and somehow be gone by the second week. I wasn't reckless. I just didn't have a system, and the not-knowing followed me everywhere: the commute, the meetings, the training sessions I sat through wondering why I felt so stuck when the numbers looked fine on paper.

The thing that changed it wasn't a raise. It was a spreadsheet. I started giving every dollar a plan, setting money aside for the bills I knew were coming, and watching the whole year instead of just the week in front of me. I rebuilt that sheet more times than I'd like to admit. But once it worked, everything got quieter. We paid off about $125,000 of debt. Then we paid off the mortgage too, a little over five years from the day we started. To put that in perspective, the average new car loan in this country now runs almost six years, so we cleared every debt we had, including the house, in less time than a lot of people take to pay off a single car. And one day I realized I was staying at a job out of fear that the math said I no longer had to feel.

Here is the part I most want you to hear, because it is the part that gives me hope for anyone. We were never broke because we did not earn enough. We earned a good living and the money still slipped away. What we were missing was a plan, and the permission to follow it. Once we had both, that same ordinary income that used to disappear started building savings, and then a kind of security I did not think people like us got to have. The income was never the thing. The behavior was.

So I left. My wife and I work from home now, raising our two teenagers, living a life with a lot less anxiety about money. Not because we struck it rich, but because we got organized. The calm came first, and honestly, the calm is the whole point.

Why northcell exists

I'm good with two things: money and spreadsheets. Most budgeting tools are either locked-up apps that hide the math, or pretty PDFs that don't actually do anything. I wanted to build the thing I wished I'd had: beautiful, fully unlocked spreadsheets for Google Sheets and Excel that do the calculating for you, so you can type your numbers in once and finally see where you stand.

Every formula is tested before it ships. Nothing is locked. They work in Sheets and in Excel, in light and dark. They are the same tools I use with my own family, just cleaned up and handed to you, starting with the northcell Annual Budget.

What I write about

On the blog, I write about the things that actually moved the needle for us: budgeting that sticks, sinking funds for the bills that ambush you, paying off debt with momentum instead of guilt, and what it really feels like on the other side of it. Plain language, real numbers, no lectures.

None of it is financial, tax, or legal advice. It is just what worked for one family, and the tools that made it work, offered in case they help yours too.

If you ever want to say hello or ask a question, I'm one message away at hello@northcell.co. We're a small, hands-on shop, and I read every note.

Talk soon,
Steve
